The delightful, eclectic, and riveting cantata, Jonah and the Whale, sets a variety of texts from medieval English poetry, sea shanties and work-songs, liturgical texts and contemporary verse. The Worcester Chorus presents the Massachusetts premiere of this significant masterwork of American choral music, written by Pulitzer-prize winner Dominick Argento, our country’s leading composer of lyric opera. This fantastic tale, told by narrator, soloists, instrumental ensemble and chorus, will fascinate and appeal to all ages. The concert will also feature classic water-themed American folk songs and spirituals arranged by Stephen Paulus, Moses Hogan and others.

“I think that music...began as an emotional language. For me, all music begins where speech stops.”

– Dominick Argento
